From
the Blackwood area of South
Wales. Hailed in some quarters as the Next Manics,
this supremely talented and musically stunning foursome, have
a passion and zeal reminiscent of the Manics early work but
are determined to stamp their own brand of New UK Rock on
the current music scene.
They
shall release their third album in 2004 (provsionally) entitled
'Bullets Are The New Black'.
It follows the epic debut 'Progress'
and the barnstorming 2nd album 'Won't
Reach The Fifth'. The album shall be produced by Steve
Brown (who has previously produced, among many others,
Sex Pistols, The Cult, Manic Street
Preachers, Mansun etc).
Every
now and then something special comes along in music, maybe
not a complete re-invention but a new take on a classic genre;
the same incredible view from a different and higher vantage
point. Stiff Kittens definitely raise the bar on Big
Riffing, High Octane, Monster Melodic, Rock Music.
Think the Nirvana for a new generation,
think Pearl Jam on a good day,
with Neil Young plugged in at
No. 11 on the Amp but not allowed to sing : If you like your
music to grab you by the unmentionables and sling you about
in a heavenly way then you are there. Not to mention the diversity
they are capable of in their more reflective moments.
The
Stiff Kittens phenomenon started in a humble way with two
friends, from Blackwood South Wales, kicking about with every
band going until they finally meshed their song writing abilities
in the summer of 96. Steve Price
(guitars and vocals) and Gary Law
(lead guitar and lead vocals) are the founders and core of
the band, working with many flavours of musicians along the
way until arriving at the current line up, with a thumping
new rhythm section consisting of Rob
Tucker (bass) and Geraint Thomas
(pummelling the skins).
They
have followed a well worn path of highs and lows, having eventually
performed as warm up act for Feeder,
as part of the Ross-on-Wye International
Music Festival; and whilst on an opportunistic photo
shoot became the last band ever to play
Wembley Stadium, followed by a triumphant show at the
Borderline London, where they
were spotted by a World Renowned rock and pop producer (Steve
Brown), who later joined them back stage to declare
his keen interest in the band and set potential dates to record
new material.
STIFF
KITTENS are a powerful band who achieve deep impact wherever
they play. Influenced by bands as disparate as the Cult,
the Cure, Nirvana
and Queen, through to
the Mission and the Manic
Street Preachers. STIFF KITTENS resolve a surprising
cocktail of harmonic clarity worthy of, and at times compared
to, Stadium Acts such as U2, Guns 'N
Roses & Simple Minds,
by combining the early fire of MSP and Filthy
Underground Riff Rock with a surprising cocktail of
harmonic clarity, to produce the captivating Rock sound heard
in their vibrant material.
In
the past 12 months,
the band has performed some stunning shows in South
England and Wales, including
in London, The Borderline,
West One Four (twice) Windmill, Upstairs At The Garage and
O'Neil's, which have resulted in the band currently
being courted by several Record Companies.
The band continue to push the boundaries, constantly looking
for new audiences to win over.
Pre-production
work with Steve Brown has commenced
on the (traditionally) 'difficult' third album, but the lyrics
and sound that has been resultant of these sessions, show
that the third Stiff Kittens album is going to be an
absolute kick-ass corker of a rock album.
The
STIFF KITTENS have the potential and talent to be the next
big Welsh export, following the likes of Stereophonics/
Manic Street Preachers/ Catatonia.
