“The
best new rock band in Britain”
- Garry Bushell, December 2004
Since
forming just under two years ago, Black # 5 have had a rapid
ascent and are now recognised as one of the best new rock
bands in the country. Based in Lincolnshire, the band’s
name came about when bassist Dale Jeffrey decided to visit
a casino. “I was really skint” he explains, “
I owed money to loads of dodgy people so decided to go for
broke. I went to the roulette table and put all I had on one
number. Black. Number five. It won and I ended up leaving
that night with £8,000. It’s paid off all my debts
and bought the band new equipment, so it seemed like it might
be a lucky name!”
After
just three months together they secured a deal with Headroom
Records. The debut album LAST
FEW HOURS, released in November 2004, distributed by
Shellshock/Pinnacle was produced
by Pat Grogan who has also worked
with Terrorvision, The
Verve, Chumbawamba and
Paradise Lost among many others.
The
album combines classic rock riffs with a modern twist and
some astonishing playing. Headroom Records MD Stephen Newman
is ecstatic with the results. ”I thought they’d
make a brilliant album,” he states “But this has
surpassed all expectations.”
The
band delighted to be signed to Headroom Records: “The
deal is absolutely excellent” says vocalist Muralee.
“What we were looking for was a record company that
really believed in us, shares our vision for the band, and
we have found that with Headroom.”
Manager
Chris Collingwood states “Both financially and artistically
the deal is excellent. They have fantastic distribution and
associations both here and overseas, plus they give us the
backing and freedom that a band like ours really wants. We
were lucky enough to have quite a bit of record company interest,
but the Headroom deal is absolutely great for us”.
In
February 2005 the band toured the UK as special guests to
Nazareth, which was preceded
by their own club tour of the UK.
From
April 24th 2005, the band will be touring the UK as part of
the ‘Schools Out Early’
4 week 3 band rotating headline UK tour of BLACK#5,
INVY and TORSOHORSE,
promoted by Solid Entertainments.
A
single will be released in 6th June (double A-side single
of new versions of ARMIES and
THIS PETTY TRIAL, both featured
on their debut album), and the band will be promoting both
the single and album by means of tour support to GENE
LOVES JEZEBEL commencing late May and throughout June
2005.
The
band also took time out after the end of the Nazareth tour
to record the promotional videos for the singles. Directed
by up and coming director Paul Green
it was overseen by legendary Producer Doug
Smith who has also produced videos for among others
Iron Maiden and
Def Leppard.
Black # 5 have songs that astonish
and the ability and belief to justify the great things that
are being said about them. “What we want is for our
music to influence people’s lives the way music has
influenced ours” says Muralee. “If we can give
that shiver up the spine, then we’ve done what we want”.
